Economics of Sandalwood Cultivation:- Well, the rate or price of sandalwood or any medicinal plants varies every year and depends on market conditions. The Sandalwood tree having 20 grade like

  • Heart Wood : Rs.7000/- to 12000/- Per Kg (Depends on Oil and Quality of Wood)
  • Root Wood : Rs.4500/- to 6500/- Per Kg (Depends on Oil and Quality of Wood)
  • White Sapwood : Rs.1000/- to 1500/- Per Kg
  • Bark & Waste : Rs.500/- to 750/- Per Kg


Subsidy and Loan for Sandalwood Cultivation in India In India, there is a subsidy and loan facility available for the farmers who wants to grow sandalwood. There are many banks including NABARD are financing for commercial cultivation of sandalwood projects. NMPB (National medicinal plants board) is also providing subsidies on sandalwood projects. For Buy Back MoU, the Farmers/Growers are required to produce following documents

  • Latest RTC of the Land (Original)
  • Boundary of the land duly endorsed by Village Accountant
  • Application of the Grower with 2 latest passport size photographs
  • MoU to be prepared on Rs.200/- stamp paper
  • Registration Fees Rs. 550/-

To encourage sandalwood cultivation, the Karnataka Forests Act, Tamil Nadu Forests Act, Kerala Forests Act and Andhra Pradesh forests Act have been amended. The ownership of sandalwood trees grown on private lands now vests with the landowners. The rules governing felling, transport, conservation and disposal of sandalwood have been liberalized. Provision has been made for payment of market value to owner of sandalwood trees.

Conservation action for economically important sandalwood of India needs to be guided by an authentic knowledge base on such plant species.
